Termites are really irritating as they can literally eat homes through your home and hearth. They can destroy good furniture, wooden hearths and antique wood showpieces that are stored or in active use. Termites can eat through almost all of your furniture and wooden fittings to make them soft and vulnerable to fracture. Most new houses already have a ready coating on the surface to repel termites.

These may be in the form of foundation treatments, traps and anti termite paints on top of the final paint coat. But this may not be present with older homes or resale homes. Before you actually buy a resale home that is made of wood, just make sure that you check with the previous owners. This is because most owners who have already carried out a home treatment with the professionals will also be eligible for re-treatments at a much cheaper rate. Once you have shifted into the home you can carry out a treatment at a much lower rate to protect the new furniture and flooring that you may have done.

There are several methods by which you can ensure that your home is free of termites. For example, one quick way of carrying this out is by using termite traps to catch early warning signs of a termite infestation. Most termite traps are placed all around the house. These baits contain blocks of wood placed in plastic protectors with slits in them for the termites to come in. These termite baits have to be checked up every week to find out where the termites are coming from. If there are termites, then the hunk of wood is borne away and you will have to replace the hunk of wood with pesticides that will kill the termites.

Once you have isolated the fact that there are termites in the house and around the boundaries, you can use termite solution to kill them off. But please be advised that the liquid solutions that are used to kill the termites are very dangerous. Most professionals drill holes or long ducts around the house and deposit the liquid solution into it to seep into the earth.

Termites are repelled and existing ones are killed off. You will have to do the same to ensure that your home is free of termites. But the chemicals that are used in killing termites are extremely toxic and this is particularly true of the older versions. Please ensure that you take suitable precautions to protect yourself. If you are not sure how to do it then call in a professional or you could end up contaminating the water table and your supply of drinking water. Another option is to use the latest chemicals that are termite repellent. The advantage with these chemicals is that they are cheap and more gel like. A lot of solution is not required and it’s just as effective without any danger to animals, children or the environment.

Another alternative is to use Borate that works just as well to kill termites. Most new houses that are located in termite infested areas will already have this as a coating on top of the paint of the home. But you can also buy and apply the paint separately. This chemical is commonly in use since the 990's as a termite repellent. The best part is that several companies have made Sodium borate washes are available where you can just wipe the liquid paint onto wood surfaces as it is not liked by termites. Borate can kill the protective bacilli that are present in the stomachs of termites and literally starve them to death.

These are just a few ways that you can ensure your home is free of termites. Please do not use chemicals unless you are sure of the effects. If you have children and pets, please do get professionals to do the job for you.
